GATO MIKIO

Gato Mikio is a family woodworking house with over 100 years of history, founded by Komakichi Gato in 1908. They are based in Yamanaka, a heartland of arts and crafts, and one of Japan’s most renowned woodwork and lacquerware regions. 

Their products are meticulously carved by hand using traditional techniques that are centuries old. Their 'Rokurohiki'” wood curving technique that creates decorative patterns can only be achieved by specialised craftsmen from this area. They also incorporate lacquering techniques unique to the local region that maintain and highlight the beautiful woodgrain.
